ED Charge Nurse

Job Summary

Responsible for unit-specific shift operations with the goal of having the shift function at optimum performance. Responsible for the assignment of patient care to ensure appropriate care based on patient need and staff skill/competence. Supervises nursing staff and patient care during scheduled shifts. Assists with staff scheduling. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities.


Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas

  • Directs actions toward supervision of nursing care given to neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients on a medical surgical unit according to nursing principles.
  • Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients’ needs are met and hospital policies are followed.
  • Continuously supervises staff to ensure quality of nursing care.
  • Responsible for directing and coordinating nursing care based on established clinical nursing practices.
  • Assumes responsibility in the absence of the ED/ICU Director and has authority for decision making as it relates to the staff supervised.
  • Assists Nurse Director/Manager with the following:
    • Ability to plan and organize orientation and in-service training for unit staff members.
    • Participates in guidance and educational programs.
    • Assists with orienting new employees utilizing the new employee checklists and competencies and orientation/evaluation at end of 90 days.
    • Schedules and assigns staff to increase efficiency and coordination of the unit. Staffs according to standards.
    • Reports changes of any type to ED staff and reports changes to departments affected by the changes.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of nursing theory and management.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency management policies and procedures.
    • Keeps informed of new developments in nursing.
    • Communicates job expectations; posts results of quality improvement monitoring.
    • Assists staff when participating in problem-solving.
    • Gains commitment of subordinates to the hospital’s mission, vision, values and goals and to the department’s focus statement. Translates this into operational guidelines that achieve patient, family, physician and staff satisfaction.
  • Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self-motivated. Completes projects by due date.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the ED/ICU Director, or designee, and within the Board of Registered Nurses scope of nursing practice.
