Job Summary
Performs venipunctures competently, expediently with a maximum of 2 attempts. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements. Performs waived testing as required. Participates in performance improvement activities.
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
- Greets the patient and identifies themselves. Explains all procedures in a way all patients can understand while maintaining confidentiality.
- Draws blood competently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
- Maintains patient records. Confirms patient orders.
- Listens effectively to patient questions and concerns. Responds appropriately.
- Identifies patients appropriately as per policy. (Name, MRN, unique identifier, DOB, Account number.
- Recognizes/identifies special instructions for patients and/or sample handling (i.e., warmed, chilled samples)
- Maintains accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
- Meets current documentation standards and policies.
- Interacts professionally with the Manager of Clinical Laboratory, Pathologist, clinical laboratory staff and other hospital staff.
- Consults with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
- Performs all aspects of patient care, within scope of practice, to ensure an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Always follows standard precautions.
- Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
- Maintains current knowledge of hospital policy, accrediting organization, state and other regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Demonstrates the value of teamwork on a consistent basis.
- Ensures that all proficiency testing is carried out appropriately.
- Proficiency testing samples are tested as required.
- The test results are returned within specific time limits that the proficiency testing program dictates.

- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
Regulatory Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Eighty (80) hours of training in the proper procedure to be employed in the performance of venipuncture under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager.
- Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy certification preferred.
- Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association, REQUIRED.
Language Skills
- Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.

- Basic computer knowledge.
